  • Sony VAIO VGN-FE570G

This slick and stylish Sony VAIO is a good choice for the media-obsessed user, with a Windows XP Media Center operating system, and undoubtedly the brightest screen in its class.

When it comes to watching and burning DVDs, this machine is truly stellar, delivering excellent color and contrast on its 15.4-inch XBrite HiColor LCD. An integrated webcam and microphone are also nice bonuses for those who are interested in online communication.

The main disadvantage of the VAIO VGN-FE570G would have to be its low MobileMark 2005 score, brought on by its relatively low 1.66-GHz processing speed, as well as a large but slow 4,200-rpm 160GB hard drive.

Overall, this notebook is a very powerful and stylish media machine with a manageable weight and good battery life. Its slightly below-average overall performance might take away some appeal for high-end business customers, but mainstream entertainment-minded users will generally be satisfied with what they get.
